Phew! January is here, and we at Athena Evolve are shaking off the last of the Christmas pudding and diving back into the proper work. We always dress up as something for our grandchildren on Christmas Day. This year was the turn of Santa and the Elf. Always great fun! What these moments actually reinforce is something vital for how we live and what we do: connection is everything, even when we’re teaching about management skills.
Getting Stuck In: It’s All About Who You’re With
We all know the festive spirit is brilliant, but how do we keep that feeling of being on the same team when the spreadsheets are out again? The truth is that growth isn’t a solo mission. Whether it’s a tough project or learning a new skill, your team’s relationships are the engine.
A Little Tip for You: This month, ditch the formal “catch-up” for a moment. Just make a point of having a proper, non-worky chat with one team member each day. See how quickly that builds a bit of rock-solid trust!
Let’s Talk About ‘Kaizen’ (and Why It Isn’t Scary)
We’re massive fans of Kaizen (that brilliant Japanese idea of continuous improvement.) Why? Because setting a giant goal like “Become a brilliant manager by March” is a recipe for burnout. It’s too big!
We prefer to look for the tiny wins.
Your Action Point: Forget the overhaul for now. What is one teeny, tiny thing you could do better this week? Maybe it’s timing your feedback better, or perhaps finally learning how to properly delegate that annoying admin task. Do that one thing brilliantly and then find the next small thing. That’s how real management skills get built brick by brick.
Training That Actually Sticks: The ‘How-To’ Matters
We bang on about training delivery because frankly, we’ve all sat through training that was drier than toast! Knowing the theory is one thing, but knowing how to deliver it so people actually do it later is where we come in.
Here’s One for Your Toolkit: When you’re explaining something important, don’t just lecture. Spend half your time asking open questions. Get your team talking about how they’ll use the knowledge. If they’re saying it out loud, they’re much more likely to remember it!
Coaching and Workshops: For When You Need a Spotter
Let’s be honest, sometimes you just need someone to tell you what you’re doing wrong (nicely, of course!) That’s what our 1-2-1 coaching is for. It’s your personal sounding board. Similarly, our team workshops are designed to be a safe space to trip over a new skill before you have to use it in front of the whole company!
Don’t Be Shy! If you feel like you’re banging your head against the same management wall, that’s exactly the time to reach out. It’s not admitting defeat; it’s being smart about your development.
So, What’s Your First Small Step, Then?
Come on, let’s hear it! What’s the one small bit of improvement you’re going to nail this January? Get in touch if you want to have a chat about yours.
All the best for a cracking, growth-filled start to 2026!
