Knowing When and Where to Seek Support: We All Need a Bit of Help at Times

At various times in life, we find ourselves at a point where a little guidance or assistance can make all the difference. Whether it’s navigating personal challenges or professional endeavours, recognising when and where to seek support is a crucial skill. After all, we’re not expected to have all the answers, nor should we feel that we need to bear the burden alone.

Everyday Examples of When and Where We Need Support include:

  • Navigating Internal Challenges

For example, when feelings of stress or anxiety leads to many of our everyday tasks becoming mentally overwhelming. Finding the space to recognise and acknowledge your feelings, their impact and then having the courage to reach out for support is often crucial.

  • Career Transitions

A new job or career path can be daunting. Seeking advice from mentors, coaches, friends, or your networks can often offer insights and opportunities.

  • Personal Development

Learning a new skill or hobby can be exciting and hugely beneficial. Finding a trusted expert is the starting point and can be significant is sustaining long-term change.

  • Health and Fitness Goals

This one isn’t uncommon and many of us (I include myself here) can start with great intentions, only to find that a few months down the line, we’re back to square one. Keeping the momentum going when you’re adopting healthier habits can be tough when you don’t have the right support in place.

The Benefits of Reaching Out for Help in Personal and Professional Development

With any level of personal and professional growth, the benefits of seeking support are many. A few examples include:

  • Efficiency

Time is a valuable resource. Seeking support allows us to leverage the expertise of others, leading to more efficient progress toward our goals.

  • Quality

Professionals in their respective fields possess specialised knowledge and experience. By seeking their support, we ensure a higher quality outcome compared to navigating challenges alone.

  • Learning and Growth

Seeking support provides opportunities for learning and skill development. It’s an acknowledgment that we don’t know everything and that there’s always room for improvement.

  • Peace of Mind and the ‘Feel Good Factor’

Knowing that we have support systems in place can alleviate stress and anxiety, enabling us to focus more effectively on our goal. The ‘feel good factor’ is fantastic when you begin to see the changes.

My Personal Reflection: The Value of Seeking Support in Business

As a small business owner, I understand the significance of knowing when to seek support. Time, budget, and expertise are precious commodities. While I enjoy learning and expanding my skill set, I recognise the importance of being realistic about my limitations.

Recently, I reached out to The Web Guys when I found myself struggling to update our website. Despite my best efforts, I was getting nowhere fast, and my frustration was mounting. However, by leveraging their expertise, not only did they resolve my challenges efficiently, but they also provided guidance which is most definitely helping my ‘website learning path’ to be more manageable. This one is most definitely outside of my comfort zone! I’m far less stressed now, that’s for sure 😊
I’d highly recommend Brian and Jon at The Web Guys!

Ultimately, valuing my time, learning from others, and seeking support led to a brilliant result, leaving me both satisfied, relieved and with more time on my hands.

Conversely, supporting others in their development, both personally and professionally, is my bread and butter. So, based on my experience of being the ‘supporter’, believe me when I say that it’s an honour to be asked and trusted to support another person in achieving their unique and important personal goals. I suspect that others will feel the same….so go on, ask!

I’ll leave you with this quote:

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new” Barrack Obama
